Very Hungry Caterpillar – Kew Gardens
A brand seasonal event designed for the well loved children’s classic by Eric Carle. The event happened simultaneously at Wakehurst Gardens, West Sussex and Kew Gardens, London, during Easter 2022.
Working alongside the teams at Kew and Wakehurst we designed a clever outdoor immersive trail for young and old alike.
Working within strict brand guidelines, budgets and schedule we designed, built and installed 2 x Easter trails that ran simultaneously across the Easter Seasonal Dates on 2022.
Large scale interactive representations of the fruit, butterlies and cocoons from the well loved children’s classic were brought to life and placed in situ at the gardens. 2 x Giant Apples archways , 4 x Giant Pair tunnels, etc etc were built to an extremelly high technical and aesthetic specification. We hand artworked the designs ourselves, replicating the large brushstrokes and collage style of Eric Carle, really bringing his artwork style to life and meaning the overall aesthetic literally felt like it had popped out of the page in front of you.
We also designed and built a series of hanging coccoon pods, as seen in the classic children’s book, that were a massive hit with the children at both Wakehurst and Kew.
The trail was extremely well received by everyone who visited and the installations themselves went on to live a second life after the Easter program finished, touring the country at various indoor shopping malls as part of brand activation’s; testament to the quality and robustness of our original build.
This was a major build for our small team of two, which quickly expanded to accommodate the scale and prestige of this design project.
